Epps Biting Fly TrapTM

Reduce biting flies by 80%…whether they are biting your horses, cows, dogs or kids, they deliver a very painful bite. The Epps kills horse flies, deer flies, and all other biting flies 24/7. Studies have shown that the trap kills an average of 1 pound of biting flies each day… WOW! This is the ultimate biting flytrap, and you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it… The trap requires no chemicals, or messy baits, just add soapy water. This trap is environmentally sound… In the past, poisons have been used to control insects. However the use of poisons is not favored due to the deleterious effects on the environment, and the possibility of killing potentially beneficial insects.

How it works:

The Epps Biting Fly TrapTM is uniquely effective because it traps biting flies by using the flies own natural behavior patterns. Many biting flies are attracted to large objects of contrasting color to the surroundings because such objects tend to be potential hosts like cattle, deer, and horses. Also, biting flies such as stable flies, horse flies, green heads, deer flies, bull flies, and yellow flies tend to circle the host before actually landing to bite.

The EPPS Trap takes advantage of these behaviors by providing a large, contrasting surface area, with transparent areas (which are actually clear plastic deflectors) representing air space between an animal’s legs and over its back through which the flies would normally circle before feeding. Flies see the deflectors as open spaces and try to fly through then. They hit the deflectors and ricochet into the soapy water in the trays below. Dish soap is added to the water in the trays to cause the flies to be wetted and drown faster.

Maintenance - Check the trap at least twice a week:
  • The Trap kills an average of 1lb. per day. Use an aquarium net (provided) or tea strainer to empty out caught flies.
  • Add additional water and soap as needed.
  • Adjust bar ties to keep targets more or less flat, level trays, replace torn deflectors, etc. as needed.
  • Keep weeds cut down around trap; weeds growing under the bottom tray reduce fly catch.
Location:

The Trap works best when placed in open, sunlit areas of pastures, and other areas where biting flies are common and the trap is easy to see from a distance. Avoid placing trap in woods or other densely vegetated areas. Use several traps, or move trap every so often to find the best area to trap.
  • In pastures: place trap in an open area away from tree line or dense vegetation. Use at least one trap for every 20 acres of pasture.
  • Around stables, dry lot dairies, and feedlots: place trap outside of stalls or pens where animals are being attacked by biting flies. Trap should be in an open, sunlit area near animals, but far enough away (10 feet or more) from fences or buildings that it appears as a distinct, stand-alone object.
  • Around homes, pools, or patios: Place trap in an open, sunlit area away from bushes, trees, and fences.
  • In wooded parks and similar areas: place trap in more open areas without heavy underbrush, for example along trails or clearings.
Note: Cattle and horses generally do not bother the EPPS Trap after becoming accustomed to its presence. However, placing the trap out of reach of livestock, or fencing off the trap area with wire or electric fencing is highly recommended.

Note: You will need Four 7’ T-posts (not included with trap)
